SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Two weeks ago, we wrote to you about a suspicious incident in the Quebec and Annette area. At that time, it was reported that a man in a white truck had approached a 13 year-old girl as she made her way to school one morning and asked her to enter the vehicle. On November 27, police issued a community safety alert about that incident and another that was reported the next day.

We have learned about a similar situation that was reported to have happened yesterday afternoon (December 2nd) in our community. Five teenage girls from a neighbouring high school were walking together on Evelyn Crescent when they were approached by a white truck with four men inside. One of the men asked the girls to get into the truck. The girls did the right thing to remove themselves from the area and quickly return to their school to report the incident to staff. Police were immediately called.

For your information, the driver of the truck had an olive complexion and was wearing a blue toque and a dark burgundy bulky coat. The passengers, one in the front and two in the back, were all white with facial stubble, and were wearing toques. The man in the front passenger seat had on a grey sweater. The truck had an extended cab and an open flatbed. The left back side of the truck had flickering tail lights. There was green writing or a stripe on the side of the truck and the inside of the truck was all black. If you have any information that might assist police with its investigation, please call 416-808-1100 or contact CrimeStoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or at www.222tips.com.

Our staff speak regularly with students about how to stay safe. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to reinforce these messages at home by reviewing the accompanying safety tips (on the reverse of this letter) with your children.
Let’s continue to work together to make our community as safe as possible.

Sincerely,

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Earlier today, we received information about an incident that was reported to have happened in our community. A 13 year-old student was approached by a man in a vehicle at Quebec and Annette at about 7:55 am this morning as she made her way to school. The man, who was one of three men in a white truck, asked the girl to enter the vehicle. The student did exactly the right thing in not responding to the man and quickly making her way to school, where she reported the incident to a teacher. We have contacted police and they are investigating.

For your information, the person is described as male, white, in his late 20s to early 30s, average height, slight build, with a brown beard. He was in the rear passenger side of a white, 4-door truck. At the time of the incident, the man was wearing an orange vest over a white winter coat and had on a light-coloured hat. If you have any information that might assist police with its investigation, please call 416-808-1100 or contact CrimeStoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or at www.222tips.com

The safety of our students is always a top priority. We are fortunate to have a number of initiatives, programs, and policies that contribute to a caring and safe school. However, most incidents happen away from school and outside of school hours. I want to emphasize to all our students, staff, and parents the need to be aware and alert at all times, no matter where you are and even in the most ordinary and everyday routines.

Our staff periodically speak to students about how to stay safe and we did so again today. I know that you too will want to help ensure our community is as safe as possible. Attached, please find tips that you may find helpful when discussing safety with your child.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school.

Sincerely,

Heather Wheeler

Principal, Annette Street PS and High Park Alternative School
