Hello Everyone,

We hope you and your families had a great long weekend.  As we settle into the school year, school councils have taken care of the business of holding elections, submitting financial reporting to the TDSB such as the 2013-2014 PSAB Report and fundraising plan and will also submit the School Statement of Needs (SSON) to your Superintendent of Education.

The upcoming Municipal Elections is fast approaching on Monday, October 27, 2014.  School Board Trustees hold the only democratically elected office that is solely responsible for education. A trustee is responsible for identifying the needs and priorities of their community and for ensuring these are considered in the decisions that result in practical educational opportunities for students, Whether it is consulting with communities on how the board will provide French Immersion or specialist programs, name a new school, or seek public input for an accommodation review of the schools in your area, it is the local trustee who makes sure that the community has a direct way to express its views on vital education decisions that affect our day-to-day lives. You have the right to vote for who represents you in these important matters. It is your opportunity to make a difference in your community.

All Candidates Meetings/Debates are an excellent opportunity to learn about the platform of the candidates in your ward.

Early French Immersion (SK entry)

The Early Immersion Program begins in Senior Kindergarten. It offers 100% French instruction in the classroom until the end of grade 3, although some specialist subjects may be taught in English. English instruction is gradually introduced beginning in grade 4 until it becomes a half-day program from Grades 6-8.

Designated school pathways exist to ensure that students have a continuation of program from the SK entry to the end of grade 12. There are 56 schools across the TDSB that offer entry to the Early Immersion Program. The application system for Early French Immersion (SK Entry) will open on November 3, 2014. Deadline for applications for this program is December 5th, 2014. Click onhttps://secure.tdsb.on.ca/pars/(S(xvaj3t45nwodmm55vkb0ct45))/public/welcome.aspx

The attendance area for an Early French Immersion program is created by a group of "associated" English feeder schools. To locate the Early French Immersion school in your area, you must first confirm the English school for your home address, then visit our French Immersion Location Finder.  Note: Attendance areas as well as associated feeder schools for Early French Immersion programs may be changed at any time in accordance with Board policy and procedures.

The parent section of the School Statement of Needs document is to be developed annually in the fall by the parent representative in consultation with the school community and the trustee (when available). The superintendent will complete his/her section when it becomes known that there may be a principal vacancy. The School Statement of Needs document shall reflect needs that are specific to the school and community. Please see the attached SSON Parent Guide and Template for a Letter to Parents

TDSB Celebrates International Day of the Girl on October 16
Hundreds of girls and mentors from the TDSB’s Young Women on the Move initiative will gather at Spirale Banquet and Conference Centre for a day themed "The Power of Girls to Innovate and Create Through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)."  The participants will hear from best-selling author-illustrator Ashley Spires who will facilitate an interactive presentation of creativity and persistence, while featuring many of her beloved children’s book characters. She will also lead a short drawing exercise, followed by The Most Magnificent Book Hack, in which participants are encouraged to bring out their inner engineer, designer, writer or artist to create something entirely new from a mini version of The Most Magnificent Thing. In the afternoon participants will focus on innovation and creation by building and exploring circuits - girls will become ‘electrical engineers’. They will learn about conductive and insulating play dough, understand electrical properties, and become circuit designers!  TDSB’s Young Women on the Move (YWM) supports thousands of girls each year and works to remind girls that they are capable and should feel competent to enter any profession.
